Trebica
Carthage vs Rome, in a famous battle, refought with the Impetus rules, and organised by Matt who was able to give command of the Romans to people who had never heard of the battle before.
The Romans had three separate commands, two flanks and an extremely strong centre vs the Carthaginian 'two'. Tel's commanding Hastubal on the left, while Tony was an apparently indecisive Hannibal on the right.
It was then that the trap was sprung with the third Carthage command popping out of the woods and hitting the Romans in the flank and rear.
Hastubal gets trapped in a stand off on the flank, but the damage to the Roman right had already been done, The Roman left is gone completely, and only the surrounded centre holds on,

Ionian War pt2
The Basic Impetus campaign in Anatolia continues and concludes.
The Spartans incursion into Lycia provokes a response from the aggrieved neutrals, while the Cadians return to defend their borders. Meanwhile the Ionians and Persians raid into each others lands to try and gain enough loot to bring in reinforcements after both taking heavy losses in last weeks battle.

Ionian War
Another Basic Impetus ancients campaign. Once again organised and GM'ed by Jim, and once more played over a grid map, but covering a larger and more politically complex area than Egypt.
This time the fighting is set near the Ionian coast of Anatolia, as the Persians and Ionian Greeks go to war/grab loot, assisted by their allies.
Ionian Greeks - Matt
Spartans (Ionian allies) - Tel
Persia - Tony
Caria (Persian allies) -Mark

Nile Campaign pt3
The campaign concludes with another Round of map moves and one final battle.
The Blemmy spend a D6 of their victory points, costing five in total, to invite their cousins over to form another army. The new force, after a brief journey, also camps on the Nile. Memphis is now surrounded by the Blemmy both north and south.

Nile Campaign pt2
The campaign continues with a few extra wrinkles added to the rules, in order to increase Blemmy and Boukoloi participation. They can now get Victory Points by raiding the four Nile squares south of the Delta. Plus siege rules added so that the three cities are now vulnerable even with garrisons in place.
| |
| From Furness Wargamers with Spears |
All the current activity appears to be around the western side of the Delta, apart from the Blemmyes who are east of Memphis. Slaves are besieging Alexandria, meanwhile the Sassinids had mistaken their position and attacked the Romans who were hiding in the Delta instead.

Nile Campaign pt1
A short campaign set in Late Roman Egypt.
A 'battleships' style map campaign and using Basic Impetus for the battles. GM'd by Jim.
Blemmyes ( Tel ) - (starts in) Eastern Desert.
Boukoloi ( Tony ) - Nile Delta
Romans ( Dave M ) - Alexandria
Sassanid ( Matt ) - Memphis & Pelusium
Romans need to defeat Sassinids but retain Alexandria, Sassanid need to defeat everybody and protect convoy from Pelusium. Blemmys and Boukoloi both need to capture\loot Memphis or the other cities, plus attack the convoy.

Great King
Internal strife in Persia as the army of The Great King, King of Kings fights the forces of the Great King, King of Kings to find out who really is the Great King, King of Kings. Played with Basic Impetus, currently the Ancient rules of choice, with three players each side and the initial forces determined at random.
The forces of the True King, Tel, ended up as primarily Infantry - Militia and Bows, with only his personal bodyguard and Matt's light Cavalry being mounted. The Pretender Tony's forces were all mounted including a force of Elephants commanded by Jim, and some heavy Cavalry commanded by Dave M.

The Vikings!
A mass brawl between eight differing clans of Vikings as they pine for the fjords and the hidden gold located there.
Rules for combat are the same as used for the Irish Campaign, basically a modified version of the SPI War of the Rings rules, but with boats added.
At the start everybody rolled to see who their natural friends and enemies were. The Bjork clan, were obviously shrieky outsiders from across the sea and ended up with three enemies.

Late Roman Report
A bit belated but someone other than the Furness Wargamers enjoyed this years game at Phalanx.
While doing a google image search I came across an overhead shot of the game that links back to a show report from Gareth Wood. Did a search in the period after Phalanx but never picked this one up.
Phalanx is on Saturday 18th June 2011 next year. Hopefully it wont be snowing then. Had to cancel my planned trip down to Pudsey on Saturday for the Recon Show due to the bad weather.

Oar Blimey
A mini ancient naval campaign based in an undisclosed place in the Aegian. Using a version of Paul's D.T.S. rules and his paper and velcro boats. A bigger version of this was played a few years back, over a month or so, when we were still at the Duke and had about 6\7 players and a more geographically accurate map; this one nighter had 4 players

Open Doors
The Club hosted a demo game at Phalanx down in St Helens. A replay of the May Day game, but with all the forces already on the table, which now looked much better with the green flocked GW mats rather than bedsheets.
Was a nice drive down with little traffic or roadworks and managed to get a decent parking space. Think I managed to avoid the speed trap on the road in. Martin was already down St Helens, and Matt and Alan brought their stuff down in the Morning. When I got there it was just about opening time.

Ptotal War
Jim and Matt had brought in some of their 15mm ancients. Ptolemaic Egyptians verses Maccabee\Hasmonean Jews. The rules being a heavily modified version of DBMM, DBAs big brother, and a game which I've never played before.

Weapons of Self Destruction
The delayed St George's Day game, played on May Day instead. A warm up for what will probably be the game that the Furness Wargamers will put on at Phalanx.
All figures and terrain (excluding the horrid underlying bedsheets) by Matt who refereed the game. Rules are Warhammer Ancient Battles, original version and not the newly released WAB2, but with house rules such as tweaking skirmishers.
Colin, Tony and Martin as the Perfidious Celts, Dave S and Tel as the Heroic Romans.

Nekkid Northerners
On Tuesday we played an Ancient battle in 28mm using a modified version of Warhammer Ancient Battles using Matt's miniatures and terrain. Matt's not too interested in 2nd Edition WAB which is due out soon (after a long delay) and has done his own tweaks to the rules and force composition.
Scenario is based on Mons Graupius. The last remaining organised Celtic force in Britannia are defending a ridge line in their homeland of Caledonia against the Roman forces who have nipped over the wall for a quick bash.
The opposing armies

Ancient Antics
Finally got roped into doing DBA for the first time in a mini tournament with six players. A round-robin with each game was nominally twenty minutes each. Armies were randomly allocated from Paul's central collection of plastics and I ended up with the Sea People, who were apparently half Viking - half Village People.

Martian Meltdown
No Campoon this week so just a quick play test of some ancient rules downloaded by Paul. These are quite complex by Paul's usual standards as they spanned over two A4 pages rather than the one sided rules he's more familiar with!
An hex based system with simple army lists and a quick play mentality, the idea behind the test being to find a set that was simple and quick for use in future campaigns, the lack of expertise in Warhammer Ancients currently being a bit of a dampener in the current Campoon, as people avoid combat or use the table resolution mechanism instead.

| From Furness Wargamers |
A simple battle, Romans vs Barbarians\Misunderstood Culture. Four players taking half a sides forces each. Matt the Romanophile and Dave S vs Me and Paul the Geordie Barbarian.
![]() |
With only one set of rules it was mostly taught verbal, and a few mistakes were made, but they were a quick set to pick up and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
![]() |
The Romans had stronger forces than the Baa-Baas and despite manging to hold my flank we were eventually overwhelmed.
After that it was time to test some more rules, this time Paul's home brewed 'War of the Worlds' campaign rules. Based on one of the recent movies (not the Tom Cruise bore fest.) it has more of a World War One feel about it - War Machines vs Tanks and Armoured Cars.
![]() |
Very much a game in development, the campaign element involves transport between small battle boards and the protection of factory elements as both sides try to gain the upper hand. The Martians by building more war machines, the Brits by mass producing tanks and guns.
Only four battle maps involved this time but I believed that its planned for a much larger campaign map.
![]() |
The Brits won the first battle vs Martian scouts, mostly due to the help from the Navy, but in the second battle the tables were turned as proper War Machines started coming off the production lines.

Return of the Jim
Returned to the Campoon to find that Jim had reversed his decision to quit and is back in the land grab.
My territory survived intact but a barbarian incursion during winter knocked my income back. Also I've now got an unwanted fort after Mark (who I gave pre-written instruction to) misinterpreted the location of the peninsula's 'choke point'.
Dave S is now an underling of Matt (Grima to Matt's Saruman or, probably more appropriately, Smee to Cpt. Hook), and combined together they split the continent of Nu Campoon in two.

Turn 5 Positions
![]() |
After this turn a couple of battles took place. One between the Nurgles and Paul after the Nurgles got sick of running away. The second between my Triangles and Dave M's Sassinids, as I put three armies against his one.
The Battle
Tel's Triangles 2800pts (based on Shildwall Wessex)
vs
Dave M 1400pts (Sassinids)
Starting positions
![]() |
The Wall of Ceorls, trimmed with a line of Huscarls and Thegns. When Mark mentioned that we were a slow moving wall we pointed out that walls don't generally move at all.
![]() |
The Triangles slowly push them off the board as not a single meelee took place, only some consistant sniping.
The hit and run tactics did knock down the Triangle forces a bit but the solid wall restricted the cavalry and with no more room to maneuver they left the field but only after mulling a trial charge of one of the numerous Shieldwalls.
End of Turn 5

Due to absentees next week (including myself) the campaign will be given a miss.

Normans Nurgling
Campoon Battle 2
Matt (1500pts Normans)
vs
Martin the High Nurgle (1500pts Picts)
(actually played by Dave M due to Martin's absence)
The Field of Play
![]() |
| From Campoon 3 |
The Nurgles outnumber the Normans quite heavily on the ground, but apparently the Normans have some 'panzers' available.
Nurgles Advance, Normans Encircle
![]() |
The terrain is not really to the Nurgles advantage. There is also another Norman Cav circling around just south of the picture.
Panzerblitz Arrives
![]() |
The Cavalry finally hits sending whole ranks of dead Nurgles crashing to the ground. The Normans manage to penetrate into the rear area, and if not for the time limit being reached could of crushed the remaining Nurgle forces. As it is the Nurgles don't come off to bad (but are still forced to retreat on the map).
End tally: Matt lost around 120pts, The Nurgles around 500pts. With the new rules for replacements being implemented (actually they are the ones that were used in the LoTR campaign) this could be reduced for both side quite a bit.
[Disclaimer: I have no idea why Martin refers to all his armies as Nurgles as there appears to be no connection with proper Warhammer Nurgles other than their implied vileness\smelliness. He's used Garden Gnomes as Nurgles before now.]
